Dynamic Strain Measurement of a Golf Club Head on Impact
by MEMS Strain Sensors

We propose a method on strain measurement in a golf club head for detecting the impact force. We embedded two MEMS strain sensor chips in a head. In this method, we were able to measure the dynamic changes and the distribution of the strain in a head. We have fabricated the MEMS chips which detected two directional shear strain and compressive strain. The chip size was 2 mm ~2 mm ~0.8 mm. We measured the strain on impact between the iron head and a golf ball. When the head speed was 28 m/s, the peak of the compressive strain near the centroid was 4 ~103 strain in contact, 0.4 ms.
